ScreeningCASA carefully screens potential volunteers due to the vulnerable nature of the children we support, as well as the high level of responsibility entailed in becoming an advocate. We conduct interviews, have an in-depth application, and request references. We also require applicants to undergo a national criminal background check. This is followed-up with another screening by the local District Attorney. We also require a current print out of a DMV driving record and proof of current insurance. A volunteer will be not be appointed to a child until all screening aspects have cleared. Successful completion of training does not mean that a volunteer will be appointed.

There are several factors that are taken into consideration in determining the appropriateness of a potential volunteer. Many of these are covered in our section on the qualities and responsibilities of an advocate. Additional factors are discussed below.

Screen-Out Factors:

  • Criminal history, especially anything involving children or violence
  • Involvement with dependency court proceedings
  • Drug and/or alcohol related conviction within the past 5 years
  • Recent arrest for drug and/or alcohol charges

Factors taken into consideration regarding past history:

  • Length of time since event occurred
  • Nature of activity
  • Evidence of rehabilitation

    Driving Record Criteria:
Aspects of a CASA volunteer's responsibilities often entail attending meetings and court hearings. If a volunteer is driving to these meetings, they must pass the following criteria:

  • must have valid California driver's license
  • must maintain current proof of insurance
  • cannot have been involved in 3 or more traffic citation in the last 3 months
  • cannot have been involved in 3 or more vehicular accidents in the last 12 months
  • cannot have been convicted of a DUI or DWI within the last five years

CASA volunteers often transport children, if a potential volunteer is unable to transport it will significantly impact their ability to visit with the children - and will impact our ability to assign them to a case. In order to transport a child a volunteer must meet the above criteria and:

  • must agree to follow CASA policy and procedures for safety including following all seat belt and child safety seat regulations
  • must not drive if they have been drinking any alcoholic beverages or taking any medication that may impair their ability to drive
  • must not exceed the posted speed limit

    If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of the screening procedures, please contact the volunteer coordinator. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
