A Family-Centered Approach to Working with Youth

In this workshop you will learn how to identify family issues that affect substance abuse, how to include the family in prevention and recovery, and how family dynamics play a role in preventing or tempting relapse. The workshop will focus on effective communication, the Drama Triangle, roles within the family, medical aspects of co-dependency. Presenter: Nancy Hunter

Nancy Hunter has been in the substance abuse field for 16 years including several years as a staff counselor with St. Joseph Hospital Family Recover Service, where there was a strong emphasis on family centered approach. Nancy conducts alcohol and other drug education support groups for students in the Eureka City Schools, through a Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities grant funded project.

HSU's ITEPP offers new PDP in Tribal Heath & Human Services

ITEPP, The Indian Teacher and Educational Personnel Program, has introduced a new Professional Development Program (PDP) in Tribal Health and Human Services targeting counselors, nurses, social workers and others who work in tribal communities. Taught by Dr. Susan C. Cameron.

Spring Semester - 2004
* AIE 435 - Counseling Issues (a 1-week intensive January 12-16, 2004)
*AIE 380 - Working with Tribal Children and Families (a 15-week online course beginning January 20)

Summer Semester - 2004
*AIE 380 - The Abuse/Neglected Child and the Law (a 1-week intensive)

The Cost of each 3-unit course is $390; for registration, please contact Extended Education at 826.3731.

Our courses have been very well received, and we are anxious to keep them going-all it takes is enrollments! Please let your network know about the availability of these courses through HSU's Extended Education Office.
