The Effects of and Intervention Strategies for Prenatal Alcohol and Tobacco Use

This workshop addresses the effects of prenatal alcohol and tobacco use. Connie will review current research, how the woman's body is affected, the harmful effects on the fetus, and the physiology of withdrawal. Michael will provide information and resources for working with a woman who is using these substances during her pregnancy; how to approach a current user, what steps to take in conducting an intervention, where to find help and assistance, and how to suppoort a woman in maintaining her decision not to use. Presented by Connie Basch, M.D. and Michael Goldsby.

Connie Basch, MD is a physician practicing in Humboldt County at the Full Circle Center for Integrated Medicine. She studied biochemistry and molecular biology in college, attended medical school at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed residency training in Family Practice. She has completed advanced training in Mind/Body Medicine, Herbal Medicine, and Nutritional Medicine. Her particular interests are obstetrics and HIV care. Michael Goldsby is Coordinator and Instructor for the Addiction Studies Training Program at College of the Redwoods. He was the Director of the St. Joseph Hospital Family Recovery Services, and has extensive experience in the substance abuse counseling field.
